The Institute of Fundraising

Publishes a range of Codes of Fundraising Practice, which are standards set for fundraisers in the UK. There are separate codes for each fundraising technique, and they provide guidance on best practice, areas of the law and the techniques themselves. The codes are available from the Institute’s website, and you can download individual guides or the whole set.

Guidance and tools for volunteer fundraisers.

The Institute of Fundraising has created a new website offering guidance and tools for volunteer fundraisers. The site is funded by the Office of the Third Sector and the Vodafone UK Foundation. It provides advice on fundraising law and best practice, and allows volunteers to create sponsorship forms, letters and other materials bearing the logo and mission statement of their chosen charity.

Charities and Fundraising

If donations come from people who are UK taxpayers, registered charities can attract more money by claiming the tax relief available to charitable donations. This is generally known as tax effective giving and there are various methods depending on the type of donation.

Gift Aid

HM Revenue and Customs manage the scheme and their website provides information and what charities need to do to claim it.

Gift Aid transitional relief

Following the changes to the basic tax rate from april 2008, HMRC has issued guidance on how charities using Gift aid can claim transitional relief.
