Capital fundraising to upgrade the infrastructure of a large allotment site. Group had never applied for funding before because they didn’t think there would be any funding for their work. The case study explains how these first-time fundraisers set about finding funders and learning how to apply. It charts the successful development of a long term plan and fundraising successes to date and offer their advice to others in a similar position.

Guide to Fundraising (721 KB, .pdf)

Downloadable 38 page .pdf produced for the Finance Hub by NCVO Sustainable Funding Project. The document introduces fundraising, and covers fundraising from the public, from businesses and from local communities. It doesn’t look at applying for grants.

You have to pay to use the following resources, BUT you may be able to get free access to some of them through your local Funding Advice Service, Council for Voluntary Service or Voluntary Action, Local Authority or specialist network. This is not an exhaustive list.

FunderFinder GIN  £

A piece of software for grant seekers. It contains about 4,500 charitable trusts and foundations that fund voluntary and community groups in the UK.

Trustfunding.org.uk  £

A website with details of all trusts included in the Directory of Social Change and Charities Aid Foundation publications. This amounts to over 4,200 grant-making trusts making grants of over GBP 3.1 billion a year.

Grantfinder  £

A database of around 4,000 UK and EU grants, loans, venture capital and advisory programmes. Often bought by local authorities and available through an online enquiry service called GRANTnet. Some Councils for Voluntary Service provide access to it. Includes information on about 600 charitable trusts.

Fundinginformation  £

Offers a set of services that provide up-to-date news and information for anyone involved in raising funds for not for profit organisations.

Grants4

An online information service that provides information on funding opportunities relevant to specific local areas. It works in partnership with local authorities to provide online grant search facilities.

Charity Commission Register

Search the Register of Charities, which contains details of all registered charities in England and Wales. The information provided is an extract from the annual returns and accounts, which charities with a gross annual income or total expenditure of over £10,000 have to submit to the Charity Commission.

It describes what charities have been set up to achieve rather than what they do to achieve them.

Guidestar UK

An independent charity set up to provide a single, easily accessible source of detailed information about every charity and voluntary organisation in the UK. Currently the site has details of the 168,000 registered main charities in England and Wales, and you can use the advanced search facility to pull out ‘grant makers’. In the future it aims to include charities in Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as social enterprises and informal voluntary groups.

The UK wide support organisation for grant-making trusts and foundations. As well as background information on grant making by trusts and foundations, the site provides links to its members’ sites.

Community Foundation Network

Community Foundation Network represents the community foundation movement in the UK. Community foundations are charities located across the UK dedicated to strengthening local communities, creating opportunities and tackling issues of disadvantage and exclusion. Community foundations target grants that make a genuine difference to the lives of local people. They manage funds donated by individuals and organisations, building endowment and acting as the vital link between donors and local needs, connecting people with causes, and enabling clients to achieve far more than they could ever by themselves.
