INTRODUCTORY OVERVIEW

Regional Agencies

If you are working across a wider geographic area, which may, for example, cross local authority boundaries a more relevant source of local advice might come from a regional infrastructure organisation. These types of organisation can take a wider view of what you are doing and bring together experience and opportunities from several different areas.

Find your nearest regional voluntary sector network

Use the advanced search facility in the NAVCA (National Association for Voluntary and Community Action) directory to select a region.

At a regional level you might also need to know what is happening within your Government Office, Regional Development Agency or Learning & Skills Council. Third sector infrastructure contacts will have this basic information and it may not always be relevant to what you are doing within your organisation, but there are times when it is useful to know where you fit into a government or development agency picture. The following links will take you to these two structures and are worth a brief look.

Your Regional Government Office

The Government Office Network consists of the nine Government Offices for the English Regions and their corporate centre, the Regional Co-ordination Unit.

Your Regional Development Agency

There are nine Regional Development Agencies (RDAs). They were set up by Government to act as strategic drivers of regional economic development in their region. Each RDA is led by a Chair and a Board of 15 people. With the exception of London, where appointments are made by the Mayor, board members, including the Chair are appointed by DTI Ministers. They are made up of a mix of senior people within the region including, local Government, the voluntary sector, trade unions and local businesses.

Your Region’s Learning and Skills Council

The Learning and Skills Council is responsible for planning and funding education and training for everyone in England, except for those in higher education. It operates at regional level.
