National agencies

Some of the following agencies can provide support and advice, or will be able to help you to find the best source of help for your needs. They are the agencies you would contact if you were taking the ‘top down’ approach to looking for help. It isn’t an exhaustive list, but some of the links you’ll find as you look at each site will take you to other useful websites. If you do embark on an extended internet search make sure that you are confident that the material you are looking at the end of it is from a good quality source. If you’re worried, ring the organisation directly to ask questions about the services it offers on its website.

The Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations, aims to connect, develop, and represent the third sector's leaders.

ACRE

Action with Communities in Rural England. Promotes the interests of rural communities and also acts as the national umbrella organisation for 38 Rural Community Councils throughout England.

Arts Council

Can provide information and advice on funding for the Arts.

British Association of Settlements and Social Action Centres (BASAC)

A national umbrella association supporting organisations helping deprived neighbourhoods across the UK.

Business Link

Practical advice for business, including a guide to developing social enterprise. Some business methods are transferable into third sector organisations and this is a useful site to see where the overlaps are.

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF)

Aims to raise the profile of giving, lobbies for tax breaks, and provide an increasingly broad suite of services to charities and their supporters. It provides help and advice to donors, as well as charities, and delivers a range of financial services in the UK and overseas.

Community Development Finance Association (cdfa)

cdfa is the trade association for Community Development Finance Institutions (CDFIs). CDFIs are sustainable, independent financial institutions that provide capital and support to enable individuals or organisations to develop and create wealth in disadvantaged communities or under-served markets.

Community Development Foundation (CDF)

Provides intelligence, guidance and delivery on community development, engagement, empowerment and capacity building in England and across the UK.

Community Foundations Network

Community Foundation Network represents the community foundation movement in the UK. Our aim is to help clients create lasting value from their local giving through the network of community foundations.

Community Matters

A National Federation for Community Organisations. It aims to promote and support action by ordinary people in response to social, educational and recreational needs in their neighbourhoods and communities. Has particularly good information and advice on running community buildings and village halls.

Community Transport Association

A UK-wide member organisation that promotes excellence in community transport. Provides development support and training.

Development Trusts Association (DTA)

The national body for development trusts. Development trusts are community owned and led organisations that cultivate enterprise and develop community assets. The Development Trusts Association helps people set up development trusts, helps existing trusts to work effectively, shares skills and experience and attracts support and investment.

DIAL UK

A national organisation for a network of approximately 130 local Disability Information and Advice Line services (DIALs), run by and for disabled people.

Directory of Social Change (DSC)

Aims to be an independent source of information and support to voluntary and community sectors worldwide. The DSC is a key provider of funding information resources, training and publications.

Environment UK

This site, hosted by the British Council, provides a guide to environmental research, policy and practice in the UK. You can use this gateway to find out about funding for environmental research and which government departments are involved. You can also locate environmental agencies or read about the international bodies and conventions that are concerned with environmental issues.

Faithbased Regeneration Network UK

The Faith Based Regeneration Network (FbRN) is drawn from nine different faith traditions. Its aims include encouraging the active engagement of faith groups in local regeneration initiatives and partnerships and building the capacity of faith groups by identifying, demonstrating and promoting good practice. Its publications include ‘Faiths and Frontiers on the Starship Social Enterprise: boldly going as faith based entrepreneurs?’ published in 2007.

FunderFinder

FunderFinder is a small UK charity producing software and Key resources, mainly for grant-seekers.

Governance Hub

One of six ‘hubs’ set up through ChangeUp to champion good governance. It aims to: increase the supply of trustees or board members; enhance the knowledge and skills of trustees or board members;and increase the governance capacity of organisations to deliver their missions.

Government funding.org.uk

Contains a lot of accessible and useful advice including guidance on how to apply for funding, and A-Z of funding terminology and links to agencies providing further help. You have to register with the site to get at the content - this is free if your turnover is less than 500,000 pounds a year but you have to pay if it is higher.

Help the Aged

Provides support and advice – including on fundraising – to local Help the Aged groups.

Housing Association Charitable Trust (HACT)

Provides advice on funding to small groups working in the area of housing and homelessness.

ICT Hub

One of six ‘hubs’ set up through ChangeUp. The ICT Hub's mission is to create a sustainable environment, within which voluntary and community sector organisations can take practical steps to use and benefit from ICT, supported at a local level.

Institute of Fundraising

The professional membership body for UK fundraisers, working to promote the highest standards in fundraising practice and management. A range of free resources for fundraising are available from the website.

National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO)

A key national umbrella organisation providing a range of advice and support services, campaigning, research and policy work nationally.

NCVO’s Ask NCVO

Search for advice and information.

NCVO’s Sustainable Funding Project

A service aimed at encouraging and supporting voluntary and community organisations to explore and exploit a full range of funding and financing options.

Sector Skills Development Agency

The Skills for Business network aims to boost the productivity and profitability of the UK by identifying and tackling skills gaps and shortages on a sector by sector basis. In essence it tries to get the right people with the right skills in the right place at the right time. The Skills for Business network is made up of 25 Sector Skills Councils - each one is an employer-led, independent organisation. The SSDA underpins the network and is responsible for funding, supporting and monitoring the SSCs.
This is a source of information for third sector organisations that employ people, and which probably hold service level agreements with local and central government to deliver services. Of particular interest may be the pages covering social care, children, early years and young people's workforces in the UK, the health sector across the UK and retail.

Social Enterprise Coalition (SEC)

The UK's national body for social enterprise. It provides support, represents the work of its members, influences national policy, and promotes best practice.

Sport England

Can provide advice or direct sports groups to a relevant source of advice.

The Charity Finance Directors' Group

A membership organisation set up in 1987 and specialises in helping charities to manage their accounting, taxation, audit and other finance related functions.

UK Workforce Hub

One of six ‘hubs’ set up through ChangeUp. Helps organisations to attract, develop and keep the staff, volunteers and trustees they need to fulfil their missions and make a positive difference to society.

Volunteering England

Works to support an increase in the quality, quantity, impact and accessibility of volunteering throughout England. This web site offers a range of resources for anyone who works with or manages volunteers, as well as to those who want to volunteer.

Volunteering Hub

One of six ‘hubs’ set up through ChangeUp. Hosted by Volunteering England, it aims to support voluntary and community organisations to recruit, support,develop and manage volunteers effectively.
