Are you giving funding advice?

This site is aimed at funding advisers and the groups they work with, to bring together all of the resources and tools needed to make informed choices about funding and income generation.

There’s a wealth of information and advice, research materials and toolkits presented in downloadable formats to support you and the groups you advise.

If you’re trying to help the groups you work with broaden their horizons and develop a more sustainable mix of funding, you may find the toolkit for funding advisers (see below) particularly useful.

To help you quickly access the information you need, the resources have been listed under various topic headings in the left hand menu.

Under each topic you will find Introductory Overviews covering a range of issues, a formatted pdf leaflet of the text which you can download and print and a resources section containing links to further resources on the topic.

Some topics will also offer links to relevant Case Studies and some of the more technical topics have Expert Guides.

Giving funding advice to any organisation is not necessarily an easy task and in many instances you may find that just finding ‘a grant’ is not the first step. This site aims to provide you with the information you need to assess an organisation’s capacity to manage funding and to plan the most appropriate funding strategy for them.

A good place to start in identifying what a group may need is by using the Funding mix.The Funding Mix is a simple but effective tool that you can use to guide you to the content that will be most useful to the group you are advising. You can get the group to use this tool themselves– or use it with them.

Our Introductory guides to funding and finance are aimed at funding advisers working with new and small to medium-sized voluntary and community organisations and social enterprises. This series of downloadable PDF documents covers a range of funding issues and each contains practical information on a specific area of funding or finance, including case studies, tools and further resources.

Our Toolkits for funding advisers provide practical and useful exercises to assist funding advisers to deliver advice and guidance more effectively and confidently. They are aimed at funding advisers working with new and small to medium-sized voluntary and community organisations and social enterprises. Each toolkit is available as downloadable PDF resource to use with groups on a specific area of funding or finance.

And for practitioners both in the voluntary and community sector and the statutory sector, our Briefing papers - Encouraging better funding practice are aimed at providing information on public spending rules and encouraging better funding practice.

York and North Yorkshire Funding Advice Network

Good example of how a network can work well. Having a sole co-ordinator is beneficial, ensuring that the network keeps happening. It also helps that the co-ordinator has a sub-regional overview of funding advice services in the area.

An example of how a network works well by having a single dedicated co-ordinator and being linked to an organisation whose services benefit the network.
